    Confessions of a late‐blooming, “miseducated” philosopher of science.Benjamin B. Alexander - 2016 - Zygon 51 (4):1043-1061.
This article provides a survey of Walker Percy's criticism of what Pope Benedict XVI calls “scientificity,” which entails a constriction of the dynamic interaction of faith and reason. The process can result in the diminishment of ethical considerations raised by science's impact on public policy. Beginning in the 1950s, Percy begins speculating about the negative influence of scientificity. The threat of a political regime using weapons of mass destruction is only one of several menacing developments. The desacrilization of human life (...)

Gender and professional purity: Explaining formal and informal work rewards for physicians in estonia.Elizabeth Heger Boyle & Donald A. Barr - 2001 - Gender and Society 15 (1):29-54.
How does gender affect work rewards for professionals in a state-run economy? Using surveys from physicians in Estonia in 1991, the authors first found that the gender of the physician did not affect the level of formal rewards. However, because the state allocated formal rewards on the basis of professional purity, which was negatively correlated with feminization, specialties that had the greatest proportion of women also had the lowest formal rewards. These findings contrast with the author's findings for the level (...)

Bad luck and cancer: Does evolution spin the wheel of fortune?Benjamin Roche, Beata Ujvari & Frédéric Thomas - 2015 - Bioessays 37 (6):586-587.
Graphical AbstractCancer is a complex disease, with sophisticated cellular mechanisms as the targets of evolutionary processes driven by random genetic and epigenetic mutations. Oncogenesis is evolutionarily linked to stem cell numbers/mutations and organ/body size; therefore, inter-disciplinary frameworks across different scales (cellular, tissue, organs and species) are necessary to decipher cancer progression.

(1 other version)The Influence of the Stimulus Design on the Harmonic Components of the Steady-State Visual Evoked Potential.Benjamin Solf, Stefan Schramm, Maren-Christina Blum & Sascha Klee - 2020 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 14.
Steady-state visual evoked potentials are commonly used for functional objective diagnostics. In general, the main response at the stimulation frequency is used. However, some studies reported the main response at the second harmonic of the stimulation frequency. The aim of our study was to analyze the influence of the stimulus design on the harmonic components of ssVEPs. We studied 22 subjects using a circular layout. At a given eccentricity, the stimulus was presented according to a 7.5 Hz square wave with (...)

  33. Kierkegaard's ontological and ethical conception of Christian being.Benjamin Vialle - 2011 - Emergent Australasian Philosophers 4 (1).
Though much philosophical and theological debate centres on various aspects of religious life, the very definition of a religious life in any given tradition is often unclear. This paper focuses on Christianity and asks, what does it mean to be a Christian? Kierkegaard‟s authorship offers an insightful conception of Christian being. An ontological account of being in „correct relation‟ and an ethical imperative to imitate Christ and love one‟s neighbour constitute Kierkegaard‟s idea of what it means to be a Christian. (...)

Dionysian economics: making economics a scientific social science.Benjamin Ward - 2016 - New York, NY: Palgrave-Macmillan.
Nietzsche distinguished between two forces in art: Apollonian, which represents order and reason, and Dionysian, which represents chaos and energy. Economists, Ward argues, have operated for too long under the assumption that their work reflects the scientific, Apollonian principals that inform physics when they simply do not apply to economics: 'constants' in economics stand in for variables, and the core scientific principles of prediction and replication are all but ignored by economists. Ward encourages economists to reintegrate the standard rigor of (...)

    A Humane Case for Moral Intuition.Benjamin S. Llamzon (ed.) - 1993 - Rodopi.
The book contends that contrary to accepted interpretation, moral intuition, rather than any other form of reasoning, least of all formal logic, is the moral method found in the ethics of Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant and Dewey - the first four chapters of the book. These four thinkers represent a dialectical selection of ethical relativism and absolutism as well as a chronological succession from ancient to contemporary thought. The fifth and concluding chapter is a major presentation of the author's thesis on (...)

Roman law in the state of nature: the classical foundations of Hugo Grotius' natural law.Benjamin Straumann - 2015 - Cambridge, United Kingdom: Cambridge University Press.
Roman Law in the State of Nature offers a new interpretation of the foundations of Hugo Grotius' natural law theory. Surveying the significance of texts from classical antiquity, Benjamin Straumann argues that certain classical texts, namely Roman law and a specifically Ciceronian brand of Stoicism, were particularly influential for Grotius in the construction of his theory of natural law. The book asserts that Grotius, a humanist steeped in Roman law, had many reasons to employ Roman tradition and explains how (...)
